Scoring the Ravens Progressive Matrices Test

Scoring the RPM is based on two factors:

  • How many out of (60) problems (matrices) the tester correctly solved, and
  • The age of the tester.

Calculating Test Age:

The scoring matrix for the Ravens consists of a table (a 2-dimensional array) of 6-month age ranges, from 6.5 years to 16.5 years. For each age group, N number of correct answers corresponds to a certain percentile score. As a student’s age increases, she/he has to get more correct answers in order to earn the same percentage score. For example, at age 9, 40 correct = 95%; but at age 13.5, 53 correct answers are required to earn a 95%. (The % are nationally normed percentile ranks, not actual % of correct answers.)

Scoring the Ravens:

The form below allows you to enter the date of birth, testing date and score for each person, and it will then output the final percentage score.

For purposes of GATE identification in PVUSD, we look for percentile scores at or above the 95th percentile. Percentile scores between 90–95% are borderline and can be considered if other compelling evidence suggests giftedness. GATE identification, as stated earlier, is based on the consideration of multiple measures, not just the Ravens.
